Ulsan wins 1-0 over Incheon Kim Min-jun scores winning goal
Jeong Jae-hee leads Pohang to victory with multiple goals
Professional soccer team Pohang Steelers won a landslide victory against FC Seoul in the ‘Kim Ki-Dong Derby’ and advanced to the semifinals of the Korea Cup.
Pohang, led by coach Park Tae-ha, defeated Seoul, led by coach Kim Ki-dong, 5-1 in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Hana Bank Korea Cup held at Pohang Steel Yard on the 17th.
Last year’s champion Pohang is just two wins away from winning the Korea Cup for the second consecutive year and their sixth overall title.
This match attracted even more attention as Coach Kim had been in charge of Pohang until last year.
This season, Coach Kim has not been able to lead his team to a single win against his former team Pohang. As of today, the team has recorded 1 draw and 2 losses in official matches, including 1 draw and 1 loss in the league.
Seoul was disappointed that Jesse Lingard, a former English Premier League (EPL) player who was increasing his influence in the second line, could not play that day as he suffered a hamstring injury in the previous league match and was out of the lineup for four weeks.
Pohang took the lead in the first half’s extra time with a goal that showed the focus of striker Lee Ho-jae.
Lee Ho-jae, who was in front of the goal, did not miss the opportunity and immediately shot with his right foot to score the first goal after Heo Yong-jun’s shot hit the crossbar and bounced out.
In the 20th minute of the second half, Pohang’s Hong Yun-sang’s diving header was blocked by Seoul goalkeeper Baek Jong-beom, and Oberdan, who was lurking on the right side of the goal, fired a right-footed shot to make it 2-0.
Seoul, which had been strengthening its lead by bringing in Iljutchenko and Jo Young-wook in succession in the early second half, scored a goal just two minutes after conceding a goal.
Kang Sung-jin’s cross kick from the right hit Pohang defender Jeon Min-kwang’s foot and went into the goal. This was recorded as Kang Sung-jin’s goal, not Jeon Min-kwang’s own goal.
However, Pohang solidified their victory with a wonder goal by Jeong Jae-hee in the 32nd minute of the second half.
Jeong Jae-hee sent a sharp right-footed curling shot from the left side of the goal area into the top right corner of the goal.
Here, Jorge, who was substituted in the 36th minute of the second half, scored an additional goal with a diving header.
It was Jorge’s first field goal after suffering terrible goal-scoring bad luck all season.
In the second half of added time, Jeong Jae-hee scored multiple goals by powerfully shooting with his right foot from the right square to seal the 5-1 victory.
In the match between Ulsan HD and Incheon United, both of which had vacant official managers, Ulsan won.
Ulsan defeated Incheon 1-0 by protecting Kim Min-jun’s goal in the 27th minute of the first half at Ulsan Munsu Football Stadium.
Kim Min-jun finished off a cutback from the left by Kim Min-woo with a non-stop left-footed shot, splitting the Incheon goal.
This is the comeback goal of Kim Min-jun, who recently returned to Ulsan after serving his military service in Gimcheon Sangmu.
Striker Yago, who left Gangwon FC in the summer and put on the Ulsan uniform, made his Ulsan debut as a starter on this day.
Yago scored a brace for Incheon in extra time in the second half, but was disallowed for offside.
Ulsan is currently playing under the acting head coach system of head coach Lee Kyung-soo as coach Hong Myung-bo, who led the team, is now in charge of the national team.
Incheon, where coach Cho Sung-hwan voluntarily stepped down due to poor performance, is also headed by head coach Byun Jae-seop as acting coach.
At Gimpo Solter Football Stadium, where heavy rain was falling, Jeju United won 1-0 against Gimpo FC of K League 2 (2nd division) with a winning goal by Yuri Jonathan in the 47th minute of the second half, advancing to the semifinals.
Jeju has advanced to the semifinals for two consecutive years.
Gimpo had to be content with their best performance to date, with their previous best being advancing to the round of 16 last year.
The semi-final matchups will be decided by draw.
