Dongguk University defeated Kunkuk University 84-69 in the preliminary round of Group B of the men’s college basketball championship at the 79th National Men’s and Women’s National Basketball Championship at the Glory Sports Center Gymnasium on Feb. 2. KU conserved its players’ stamina, knowing that a win against Sungkyunkwan University in the final game of the preliminary round on March 3 would secure a spot in the quarterfinals.

Dongguk University was left with the final match of the qualifiers against the weakest team, Ulsan University. They are unlikely to lose. Even if they do lose, they will be tied with the winner of the head-to-head match between Konkuk University and Sungkyunkwan University with two wins and one loss and will take first place based on the winner-take-all principle.

Lee Dae-gyun (29 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and three steals) led the scoring, followed by Kim Myung-jin (14 points, eight rebounds), Woo Sung-hee (11 points, five rebounds), and Lim Jung-hyun (nine points, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals, and three three-pointers). Han Jae-hyuk scored just one point, but delivered 12 assists.

KU was led by Freddie (20 points, 11 rebounds) and Kim Jun-young (17 points, 4 rebounds, 9 assists), but was also disappointed by poor shooting (1-of-13 from three-point range) from Cho Hwan-hee (5 points, 3 rebounds, 9 assists, 3 steals), Kim Do-yeon (2 rebounds), and Baek Kyung (7 points, 5 rebounds).

In the next game, Sungkyunkwan University easily defeated Ulsan University, 91-53, to move into a tie for second place with Konkuk University. Ulsan University is in last place with two losses.

Five players scored in double figures for Sungkyunkwan, including Kang Sung-wook (17 points, five rebounds, seven assists, and five steals), Cho Hyuk-jae (16 points, four rebounds, two assists, and four 3-pointers), Lee Hyun-ho (16 points, two rebounds, and four steals), Lee Min-ju (14 points, seven rebounds, three steals, and two blocks), and Park Sang-hyuk (10 points, two steals).

Ulsan University, the defending MBC Varsity 2 champions, showed the difference between the two teams by committing 32 turnovers and allowing 21 fast-break points despite a solid game from Shim Jae-beom (14 points, 14 rebounds, three assists).
