Getafe striker Mason Greenwood named December Player of the Month.
“Mason Greenwood has been named Getafe’s Player of the Month for December after impressing in Spain,” the UK’s Tribuna reported on Wednesday. Greenwood received the majority of the votes, beating out four other teammates,” Tribuna reported.
“Greenwood, on loan from Manchester United, has started every game he has played for Getafe, including last month’s thrilling win over Sevilla, scoring one goal and providing one assist,” the publication said.
“Greenwood was recently involved in a controversial sending-off, but has otherwise been in sensational form for Getafe. With five goals and four assists, Greenwood’s Player of the Month honor is his first since joining Getafe on loan.”
Greenwood was once considered one of the top talents at United. After scoring 10 goals in 31 Premier League appearances in 2019/20, Greenwood hit double figures in his second season with seven goals and two assists and seemed to have settled into the professional game with no sophomore jinx.
However, an off-field scandal slowed him down. During the 2021/22 season, Greenwood was investigated for sexual misconduct, assault, coercion, and threats against an ex-lover and was unable to play until last summer.
Greenwood steadfastly denied the allegations and in February, British prosecutors dropped all charges against him, clearing the way in principle for his return to the club, but the club, facing strong opposition from fans and public opinion, vowed to investigate further internally and Greenwood was sidelined for the first six months of the year.
The club announced that its own investigation had found no evidence to substantiate the allegations, but that it had decided to part ways with Greenwood. According to a statement released by the club at the time, the decision was made to honor Greenwood’s contract but to allow him to continue his career with the club, possibly on loan.
That’s where Greenwood headed in September, to Getafe in Spain’s capital city of Madrid. Since his loan spell, he’s been thriving. Despite concerns that he might have lost his touch after being out of action for more than a year, Greenwood has adapted well to life at Getafe and is showing good form.
Greenwood has recently attracted interest from two Spanish giants, Real Madrid and Barcelona. The Sun reported on May 22, “Greenwood, who left Manchester United to play for Getafe in Spain after being accused of sexual assault, has recently received interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid. However, United has no intention of bringing Greenwood back next summer.”
“Greenwood has dazzled since moving to Spain and is clearly on the radar after a strong showing for Getafe. In Spain, scouts from Valencia and Real Sociedad are monitoring him and there are a number of other clubs keeping tabs on him,” but added: “It is highly unlikely that Greenwood will return to United.”
“Greenwood has scored five goals and provided four assists in 15 games since joining Getafe on loan,” added the UK’s SportsBible. He was the man of the match in last weekend’s 3-3 draw with Atletico Madrid, but United have no plans to bring him back to Old Trafford. The most likely option is to sell him outright next summer when his loan deal ends.”
